Things to consider:
Height – Is your island or peninsula counter-height or bar height? Counter stools are generally 24-26” high to fit a 36” high counter, versus bar stools which are 28-30” for a typical 42” high bar. Be aware that stools are not always made in both heights.
With or without a back – depending on the available walking space behind your stools you may opt for backless stools that tuck neatly under the island overhang.
How many stools do you need?
Depending on the stool style, allow the following space:
- Stools approx. 16"-18" wide: allow for 21"-22" of space
- Stools approx. 19"-22" wide: allow for 24"-25" of space
- Swivel Stools or Stools with Arms: allow for additional space
