Maybe you’re considering building a new home and want an abundance of natural light. Or perhaps you are planning on staying put but know it’s time to replace your drafty or foggy panes. Either way, when it comes to windows there has never been a better time to shop regarding style, materials, energy efficiency and convenience.
This latest technology was on display at this year’s HOMEARAMA®, where builders including Andrew Arthur Custom Homes, Drees Homes, Wieland Builders and Robert Lucke Group all showcased the latest offerings from Pella windows.
We asked Craig Hyson, trade and commercial sales manager for Pella Windows & Doors of Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky to share the biggest trends he saw at the show.
“What jumped off the page this year was the movement to large windows and doors,” he says. “Everything is getting bigger and bigger. Builders are maximizing light as much as possible. The whole back of the house is opened up. For example, in a family room there might be four glass panel doors with a trapezoid window above it which blends the interior and outdoor living spaces.”
Along those same lines, Hyson said he is seeing more and more pass-through windows. Those are being designed in both new homes and remodels and allow food and beverages to be passed from the kitchen to the adjoining outdoor deck or patio.
Quality counts
When selecting new windows, it’s important to do your research on the manufacturer, the local distributor and the installation team.
“The Pella windows and doors we incorporate into our Drees homes are of exceptional quality and designed for both durability and longevity,” says Tony Padgett, general manager with Drees Homes. “On the rare occasion that service or parts are needed, Pella’s team excels in providing prompt and efficient assistance.”
As to specifics, Hyson says homeowners are first and foremost concerned with energy efficiency. Then design trends factor in. What used to be a hot trend, is now the norm, he adds, as black exteriors and black interiors have been an incredibly popular pick for several years. And there is also a demand for built-in privacy, such as blinds inside the windows, and frosted or obscured glass.
Also, color options have also exploded recently. Wood, fiberglass and vinyl windows are available in a range of interior and exterior finishes to coordinate with the style of your home.
“That’s the beauty of Pella, Hyson says. “We have something for every type of buyer—from the entry level vinyl to a window that meets every historical requirement you can name—something maybe the buildings in OTR would require. For every type of buyer, we have a window that meets your needs.
