After an extensive renovation to the interior of their home impacted their existing patio space, one Upper Arlington couple decided that was the catalyst they needed to begin planning a new outdoor haven.
“We had a wonderful patio before, but we had to redesign it due to the new construction,” says the homeowner.
The original limestone exterior of the home along with the property’s mature trees and landscaping led the design direction for the new outdoor space. Landscape designer Jonathan Spayde of Landfare Ltd., with whom the couple have had a long-standing professional relationship, created an elegant new patio. The space serves as a natural extension of the couple’s characteristic 1932 home, which was Royce built, with a design inspired by Cotswold cottages in England.
“We wanted to carry through the old-world feel of the house, and create a timeless landscape design for the patio to complement the home’s age,” says Spayde.
Fire starter
A new wood-burning fireplace, constructed of limestone, is a prominent feature of the new patio. Surrounded by chaise lounge chairs and curved seating, the fireplace is a work of art.
“The mason matched the stone and placement pattern to that of the house. Even the grout needed to match what was used decades and decades ago,” explains Spayde. In the grilling and dining area, a custom limestone cabinet houses the grill and stainless steel appliances in the same fashion. He adds, “Everything ties in seamlessly so the new elements do not look like an afterthought.”
Singing the blues
With a classic style and muted earth tones, bluestone pavers used for the walkways further complement the house and new outdoor features.
“We had bluestone on our previous patio and liked the look and feel of it, so we wanted to keep that choice,” the homeowner says. In the new iteration, the bluestone is extended into the existing screened-in porch to visually connect this original indoor space with the new outdoor area.
The landscaping is designed to tastefully soften and balance the abundance of stone. Boxwoods and hemlocks provide green life year round. In season, large blooming magnolias, hydrangeas, and a symphony of seasonal flowers including spring bulbs, summer annuals, and fall mums decorate the patio.
“The landscape gives the property more color, opens it up to reflect a more sophisticated design, and is complementary from season to season,” Spayde adds.
When the couple wants to head outside and unwind after a long workday, spend time with family, or enjoy cocktails with friends, their new patio is a welcoming space closely tied to home, in more ways than one.
“We’re out there as much as possible,” the homeowner says. “We love it.”
