After raising their two children in Centerville, Lynn and Steve Vaughn decided it was time to get back to the country. “Steve grew up on a farm and I was excited to find a home with a little breathing room around us,” Lynn says.
While they initially thought about building a new home, they ultimately purchased an older house that sits on 32 acres in Xenia. “We loved the property, and decided to remodel the house to suit our needs,” Lynn says.
The Vaughns brought on Robert Zimpfer, owner of R.P. Zimpfer Construction, to help them renovate the home, which entailed gutting the entire main level to create an open floor plan. They also enlisted Kelly Zamonski, owner of The Kitchen Place, to help them select cabinetry for the new kitchen. “They had been carrying around a photo of a kitchen with a rustic, log cabin-inspired design, complete with a green island,” Zamonski says. “It was their dream kitchen and I wanted to make sure that we could make their wishes a reality.”
The oversized galley kitchen features a variety of unique design elements including beaded inset doors, a beautiful custom copper range hood, and a massive 13×4-foot island with eye-catching distressed green cabinetry. Thanks to the size of the kitchen, Zamonski was able to create several workstations—including areas for cleanup, food prep and cooking. “To prevent kitchen traffic jams, I designed the kitchen to have large four-foot aisles on each side of the island, allowing multiple cooks to work simultaneously,” she says.
Interior designer Winnie Cleavenger, of Winteriors, was instrumental in helping the Vaughns select everything from the black stainless steel appliances and furniture to the large copper light fixtures hanging over the island. “The mix of color and texture makes this kitchen feel like it has been there forever,” Cleavenger says. “This farmhouse renovation is a warm and inviting space for two people or 100 family and friends.”
