When this homeowner/architect was cobbling together his home and his kitchen design ideas in particular, he made sure to include remnants of one of his favorite places, Carmel, California. When it all came together, mostly by the homeowner’s hands, it created a luxurious, yet warm and cozy, home that the owners are extremely proud of.
People often refer to kitchens as the heart of the home—a place where people gather and visit during parties and holidays. But when you think about the heart’s function in the human body, it is a hard-working machine constantly delivering and receiving blood to and from all parts of the body.
This is the way Terry Jenkins and his fiancee Julee think of their kitchen—the literal heart of their home.
“It’s a machine for cooking. It’s a beautiful room, but you still make a mess,” Terry explains. “We wanted our kitchen to be centered around functionality, not entertaining. That is why it is separated from the rest of the house.”
“I enjoy cooking,” Julee adds. “But I don’t want to be stressed out about my guests seeing my messy dishes while I’m in the middle of a party. I like to be able to leave the mess for later.”
“Julee and I designed our home to be a place where you just want to melt into a chair, pick up a book, sit by the fire and do nothing,” Terry says of the overall feel of their home.
“Most people say, ‘It’s so comfortable here’,” Julee adds.
“Your house reflects the way you live,” Terry continues. “We walk through our house every day, and you think ‘Wow, we really like this house’.”
