Home repair expenses can add up quickly. The experts at DAP Products realize that homeowners have a huge expense on their hands when it comes to cooling and heating air systems. However, it makes paying for air units even more burdensome to know you are paying for air that could be slipping away through air leaks.
Air leaks can be in multiple locations in and around the house, where there are big enough gaps between two materials for air to pass through. Windows, doors, pipes, vents, electrical outlets, switches and any area where two materials meet are culprits. There are a few quick tips that can help you identify if you have air leaks in your home:
1) By simply lighting an incense stick and seeing if the smoke drifts in a certain direction, you can check to see where air may be escaping or entering your home.
2) Place a sheet of paper on a windowsill or under the door and then close them on the sheet of paper. Once shut or closed, try pulling the paper from underneath each. If the sheet of paper slides through easily without tearing, there is a big enough gap where air is leaking through and you should install a new seal.
3) For exterior facing areas, on a bright day check for any cracks that allow daylight to enter. If light comes through, air can get through too.
4) Properly sealing air leaks with some simple tools like caulk and sealant is one home repair that can save you up to 20% on your utility bill.
