When April Miller Boise and David Willbrand found themselves redoing their Pepper Pike home, they decided that they wanted it to be bold and dramatically different. They wanted an open space and a modern style, particularly in the kitchen where they do a lot of entertaining.
The kitchen was a priority to April and David. “We like entertaining and have a large family as well as lots of extended family in town, so the kitchen island is an important focal point in our lives.” The extra wide island, a design that not many kitchen islands have, features hidden storage and is topped with a striking veined granite. “I was drawn to it because it has that industrial feel—like concrete floors,” explains April.
Surrounded by comfortable upholstered stainless steel stools, the island invites kids to sit and talk after school or friends to linger over tea. Casement windows were replaced with eight foot doors, creating direct access to the extensive porch and private wooded view. A pair of low overstuffed leather chairs offer additional seating that can be pushed to one side while entertaining. An angled bar eases the transition to the dining room with matching espresso cabinets and granite countertops.
