When it comes to covering walls and ceilings, it’s often easier to play it safe with light grays, beiges, creams, or whites. But, if you’re ready to take the plunge and add a bit of eye-catching drama, choosing a darker color may just be the ticket.
Small can be mighty
Often homeowners and designers save dark colors for larger rooms, but some of the smallest spaces in our homes—our powder rooms—are the perfect playground for experimenting with dark hues.
Go all in
While most of us were raised on “ceiling white,” that tide has shifted. While a white ceiling is still a very viable option—especially with a striking pendant or chandelier, black on the ceiling and trim makes a hard-to-beat proclamation.
Lighten the load
Keep dark-colored rooms from feeling a bit heavy by balancing their depth with plenty of lighting—natural is wonderful, but a dramatic light fixture adds even more power to the statement you are making.
Consider contrast
While a no-brainer companion to blacks and navies is white, adding any contrasting color—bright reds, warm caramels, rich turquoises—or bold artwork makes your dark walls the perfect stage for showcasing your colors.
Skim the surface
For wallpaper, consider selecting a pattern that adds a bit of texture. For paint, flat will produce a velvety finish, but if it’s in a high traffic area, a better choice would be satin.
